This is my first post about idioms.
In this post I will write about idioms which the verb "dar" is present.

- EXPRESSÕES IDIOMÁTICAS I-

- Dar a mão e ele quer o braço = característica de alguém que recebeu algo e já deseja receber muito mais.

meaning in English: give someone an inch and they'll take a mile

Exemplos:

a) Eu dei R$ 10 para meu filho e ele me perguntou se eu não tinha uma nota de R$ 20. Eu dou a mão e ele quer o braço! (I gave R$ 10 to my kid and he asked me if I wouldn't have R$ 20. Give someone an inch and they'll take a mile.)
b) Ontem eu ajudei minha prima Julia com uma dúvida de matemática. Hoje ela me pediu para eu fazer a lição de casa dela. Nós damos a mão e ela quer o braço! (Yesterday I helped my cousin Julia with a question about maths. Today she asked me to do her homework. Give someone an inch and they'll take a mile.)

- Dar a volta por cima = superar alguma dificuldade ou perda; recuperar-se.

Exemplos:

a) Eu perdi tudo o que eu tinha, mas dei a volta por cima. (I lost everything I had, but I to bounce back.)

b) A sua perda foi grande, mas você precisa dar a volta por cima. (Your loss was big, but you need to bounce back.)

c) Eu vou dar a volta por cima. (I will bounce back.)

d) O jogador de futebol deu a volta por cima após sua lesão. (The football player bounced back after his injury.)

- Dar bola = dar atenção; corresponder aos flertes de alguém; se importar com algo; insinuar-se romanticamente.

Exemplos:

a) A jovem está dando bola para o rapaz. (The young woman are flirting with the guy.)

b) Não dou bola para o que ele diz. (I don't care about what he says.)

c) Ela não dava bola para mim quando eu era feio. (She blowed me off when I was ungly.)

- Dar corda para ele se enforcar = permitir que alguém se comporte livremente para que ele próprio se prejudique com suas ações; permitir que alguém fracasse através dos próprios atos.

Exemplos:

a) Ela sabia a verdade, porém deixou ele continuar mentindo, dando corda para ele se enforcar. (She knows the truth, but she let him continue lying, give him enough rope and he'll hang.)

- Dar com a língua nos dentes = contar ou revelar um segredo.

meaning in English: spill the beans

Exemplos:

a) Ela deu com a língua nos dentes e agora João sabe da festa! (She spilled the beans and João knows about the party now!)
b) Quem deu com a língua nos dentes para minha esposa sobre a minha dívida? (Who spilled the beans to my wife about my bill?)

- Dar com o nariz na porta = procurar e não encontrar.

Exemplos:

a) Ela procurou seus vizinhos, mas deu com o nariz na porta. (She searched for her neighbours, but she found no one.)
b) Minha tia veio em minha casa quando eu estava viajando, logo ela deu com o nariz na porta. (My aunt went to my home when I was traveling, therefore she found no one.)

- Dar murro em ponta de faca = insistir com um erro; persistir com algo que não mudará ou que vai acarretar em algum erro.

Exemplos:

a) Não acredite nele, você está dando murro em ponta de faca. (Don't believe him, you are barking up the wrong tree.)
b) O que você está esperando? Ela não vai contar a verdade para os pais dela. Não dê murro em ponta de faca. (What are you waiting? She won't say the truth for her parents. Don't bark up the wrong tree.)
c) Ela não tem talento para ser atriz, mas continua dando murro em ponta de faca. (She doesn't have the talent to be actress, but she is barking up the wrong tree yet.)

- Dar um pé na bunda (muito informal) = terminar um namoro; expulsar alguém ou um funcionário do emprego.

Exemplos:

a) Minha namorada me deu um pé na bunda! (My girlfriend dumped me!)
b) Você vai dar um pé na bunda dele? (Will you dump him?)
c) O chefe deu um pé na bunda do funcionário preguiçoso. (The boss kicked lazy employee out.)

- Dar o braço a torcer = admitir que estava errado; mudar de opinião; ceder.

Exemplos:

a) Ela deu o braço a torcer e assumiu ser responsável pelo acidente. (She gave in and assumed be the responsible for the accident.)
b) O governo não pode dar o braço a torcer. (The government can't to give in.)

- Dar um jeito = arrumar; organizar; encontrar alguma solução para um problema; improvisar; melhorar

meaning in English: find a way to fix; to manage; find a way to arrange; to improve

Exemplos:

a) Seu quarto está uma bagunça! Dá um jeito nele! (Your bedroom is a mess! Find a way to arrange it!)
b) A porta está quebrada. Dá um jeito neste problema! (The door is broken. Find a way to fix it!)

c) Ela deu um jeito de vencer. (She managed to win.)

d) Eu quero dar um jeito no meu cabelo! (I want my hair to look nice!)

e) Dá um jeito! (Find a way!)

- Dar o que falar = causar polêmica; ser motivo de fofoca ou de críticas

meaning in English: to set/start tongues wagging

Exemplos:

a) O novo cabelo da Dalila deu o que falar! (Dalila's new hair set tongues wagging!)
b) O artista famoso traiu sua esposa. Isso vai dar o que falar! (The famous actor cheated on his wife. This will set tongues wagging!)

c) Ele dá o que falar na vizinhança todos os dias. (He set the neighbors’ tongues wagging everyday.)

- Tudo vai dar certo =  everything will be alright

Exemplos:

a) Hoje é sua cirurgia, não se preocupe, porque tudo vai dar certo! (Today is your surgery, don't worry because everything will be alright!)
b) Raquel, fique calma! Tudo vai no certo! (Take it easy, Raquel! Everything will be alright!)
c) No fim, tudo vai dar certo! (Everything will be alright in the end.)

- Dar uma de João sem braço = fazer-se de desentendido;

meaning in English: to play dumb

Exemplos:

a) Ele deu uma de João sem braço e não terminou o trabalho! (He played dumb and didn't finish the job!)
b) Ela deu uma de Jõao sem braço e perguntou as razões da briga! (She played dumb and asked about the causes of fighting!)
